As we have told family and friends about our intention to adopt, we generally get one of two responses: “Awesome!” or “Are you CRAZY?” Sometimes we get both.
We do think it’s awesome! Do we think it’s crazy? In short, no.
If you look at the top of the blog, you’ll see the verse 1 John 4:19. “We love because He first loved us.” God loved us enough to send His son to die a horrible death on the cross and take the wrath for our sins. Jesus loved us enough to bear the punishment for the sins of the whole world. Because of His sacrifice and resurrection, when we confess our sins and trust Christ as our Savior, we are saved from eternity in hell and saved into fellowship with God, eagerly awaiting the day when we will enter into eternity in heaven with Him. This kind of love is a crazy love. And through the work of the Holy Spirit, it is this amazing love that motivates us to pursue whatever He has called us to. And right now, we believe that our call is to adopt!
Our desire to adopt is motivated first by our love for Jesus Christ and our desire to walk in obedience to Him. Secondly, we’re doing it for these precious children who have experienced great loss in their lives and who don’t have a forever mommy and daddy. Beyond all of that, we do desire to be parents soon.
I won’t lie and pretend that I’ve never thought that adopting kids at 24 is crazy. There have been many of those moments. But after the emotions clear, I know that we’re being led by the founder and perfecter of our faith. It is in His steps that we desire to walk, and we know that we are safe in His sovereign plans.
