Saturday Summary

Well, we’ve finished our first week back to school! As always after a break, our main focus was, “this is how we do school. Yes, you have to do school work. Yes, really. No, I’m not kidding.” Anyone else go through these weeks?? Thankfully, Friday went very smoothly. Hopefully,we can start next week off well!

Emma and I read The Carrot Seed, reviewed numbers 0-9, counted to seventy with help(!), and learned the letter “L”, complete with making yummy lemonade. When I told PJ about our L-for-lemonade adventures, he replied, “wow. That sounds like a put-together homeschool project.” Don’t let the lemonade fool you, dear. But we had fun!

The big kids and I dove back into language arts and math. In history, we briefly studied China/opium issues, and, like all good Texans, got a jump-start on the next chapter, the Alamo and Texas independence. We’ll be giving this chapter its proper due and spending a little extra time learning about our great home state! We also started a new science curriculum, chemistry from R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey. The first two labs were met with great enthusiasm, and I’m looking forward to teaching my budding little chemists!

I’m experimenting with adding Latin, composer study, art, and piano lessons into our days. Those are ideals, but if I’ve learned anything from a few years of homeschooling, it’s that no lesson is worth losing my sanity over. I’d rather have a happy home than Latin-speaking concert pianists. Not to say I haven’t tried and, um, failed to have it all. Mom is always learning something, too!

I am currently three hours into an entire day off! I’ve been looking forward to today all week, eagerly making a list of all the personal projects I wanted to do (major endeavors such as watch Downton Abbey and Parenthood, nap, blog, read). PJ had this past week off except for part-time work, so we agreed for him to use the weekdays for his “off time” while I taught school, giving me all of Saturday to myself!! True to his word, he cooked breakfast and instructed the kids to let Mommy rest. And I am resting!

Linking up with Weekly Wrap-Up this week!
