Let It Go: Potty Training!

Katie King Katie King

Don’t worry, we haven’t totally given up expecting Seth to use the potty. Actually, he’s doing really well! We’ve now done several outings in underwear, and he is finally willing to use the potty for number two. Anyway.

For my first round of potty training, I bought a $20 E-book(!!!) that basically said…take away all the diapers forever. And you know what? It worked! I have no idea how. Emma was still in a crib, and she was able to stay dry at night without any intervention. I don’t know. Jesus knew we had other things going on and needed an easy potty trainer.

With Seth, I knew right off that we weren’t going to take all the diapers away all at once. Right now, he will only go to sleep after a substantial cup of juice. I’m too tired to take it away! He was really ready for “big boy undies”, and he picked up daytime potty use very quickly. Then…he started depending on naptime diapers for number two. So now those are gone, but it means that I’m changing clothes and sheets after every nap. My poor washing machine is tired.

For potty training round number two, I’ve let go of the idea that the kid will leap out of diapers and never have another accident. (For the record, Emma peed in an Indian canoe exhibit and on the floor of a children’s museum after diapers!) Seth is doing just fine, and he’s growing up every day. We will probably have to confront the juice issue at some point, but by then he’ll be more mature and better able to respond to reasoning and instruction (ha!). Until then, I still have diapers on auto-ship and get to (mostly) sleep at night.

By the way, nighttime training tips are welcome! :-)
