What I Learned in July

I learned that my favorite genre to read is memoirs. I usually go back and forth between fiction and non-fiction, reading two or three non-fiction for every fiction book. With fiction, I only start reading if I’m really confident that I’m about to read a really good story based on the author’s other books or multiple recommendations. My non-fiction is a mix of theology, parenting, and history, focusing on wars and all things presidential.

This month, I realized that memoirs are the perfect blend of my love for both fiction and non-fiction. The telling of a personal story picks up my fiction love, while being highly grounded in reality addresses the non-fiction side. My current kick is food memoirs. I’ve read a few by Shauna Niequist, and I got several recommendations via The Happy Hour Podcast.

I learned that Seth is still afraid of public restrooms. He’s always had major issues, particularly in airports. The constant loud flushing and whirring of hand dryers just freak him out. Most of the time, I avoid public restrooms like the plague. But when we’re traveling, there aren’t many options. While Seth’s been in diapers, PJ has usually stayed with him in the car while I’ve taken the girls inside. Potty training, however, means that Seth has to face his fears. On our drive to the beach, he urgently announced a need for the potty. We quickly found a gas station and ushered him inside. While he had managed to stay dry, he absolutely refused to pee. “Me scared!” Sigh. He ended up peeing in his diaper while standing in the grass, after he refused to just let it fly outside. On the way home, we stopped at a gas station that had automatic flushing toilets AND hand dryers, both crazy loud. My sweet boy just stood in the corner shaking and crying while I peed. I think we’re all very glad to be back at our home toilets!
