I had the opportunity to attend the IF:Gathering in Austin this past weekend. It was incredible, because God shows up there in big ways.
Every year one awesome organization is presented at the conference, and IF attendees are invited to partner together with the organization to be a part of what Christ is doing. This year's organization was the International Justice Mission (IJM). IJM works around the world to "rescue families from slavery and violence."
PJ and I have partnered with IJM in the past by hosting a small fundraiser, and I consistently hear of the meaningful, life-giving work that IJM is doing all over the globe.
At the conference, we got to hear a moving testimony from an IJM staff member who was formerly trapped in a life of violence, and we heard an overview of IJM from another staff member.
What sealed the deal for me is when she talked about the work that has been going on in Cambodia, where children as young as five have been rescued out of sexual slavery.
I have a five year old daughter. She's beautiful and precious and funny and spunky and the very last thing in the world that should happen to her is to be sold into sexual slavery. How could I live out my life with my sweet girl while someone else's girl lives a life of unspeakable horror?
The answer for me was clear. For $24 per month, I can be a small part of ending slavery around the world. That $24 is going to eat into my Starbucks runs, and my closet won't fill quite as fast. But you know what? I can't take the coffee or the clothes to heaven. But through IJM's work, there will be people in heaven who might not otherwise have heard of how much Christ loves them.
