Today I have the absolute pleasure of introducing you to Shannan Martin's debut book Falling Free.
Falling Free details Shannan's journey from living a picture-perfect farmhouse dream to moving to an "undesirable" neighborhood full of forgotten people. Throughout the book, Shannan shares the rich experiences and tough lessons that she and her family have walked through over the last few years and invites the reader to draw nearer to Christ alongside her.
I found myself wanting to highlight words on nearly every page, as much of the book resonated deeply with my own "upside-down kingdom" experiences. I was challenged and encouraged throughout Falling Free to lean more closely into the difficult people and circumstances in my life and to carefully examine how I'm spending my time and money.
I knew I'd found a kindred spirit when I read these words:
"One thing I've learned about parenting brokenhearted kids is that you can expect to have your heart broken in the process...this sort of family, cobbled together from necessity and the stubborn insistence that God wasn't playing when he said no one should be left lonely, it will unhinge you. These big kids, they will wreck you...Your heart will break in shock waves, a second time, a tenth. It won't matter. You'll love them."
And then, there are the very best sort of convicting lines like this one:
"This is the God we say we love. This is the God we signed up for. He kept nothing from us, made no false claims, hid zero agendas, and we said yes. We said we wanted the life he had to offer, and that we would follow wherever he led in order to find it. And yet we often feel all baited-and-switched when those dusty roads don't lead us back to ourselves as planned."
And this one:
"If I believe my less ensures someone else's more, what else could I possibly need to know?"
Falling Free is full of gut-wrenching grace that calls the reader to follow God wherever, however He leads. The journey may not be comfortable, but the freedom of living in His will makes it all worth it.
